Collective Decision Making in Complex Systems

My research explores collective decision-making in complex systems, with a particular focus on how teams and groups form decisions together, and how embodied sensing, relational dynamics, and inquiry-based practices shape commitment, coherence, and collective action.

I’m interested in the moments when decisions matter, but the way forward isn’t clear — when people don’t fully agree, and analysis doesn’t get us there. These moments reveal not only what decisions are made, but how teams organize attention, authority, and responsibility in the process.

Research focus

My doctoral research centers on collective decision-making within teams and multi-stakeholder groups, examining how embodied sensing and relational ways of knowing influence strategic direction and shared outcomes.

I study how groups access and integrate different forms of intelligence — cognitive, emotional, somatic, relational, and ecological — and how these shape participation, power dynamics, and the durability of decisions over time. Rather than treating decision-making as a purely rational process, my research approaches it as lived, relational, embodied, and situated within wider systems.

Research approach

As a practitioner–researcher, I conduct research from within team and organizational contexts rather than from outside them. My approach integrates qualitative research methods, systems sensing practices, and reflective inquiry, allowing practice and research to inform one another.

Why this research matters

As organizations and networks face increasing complexity, the ability for teams to make decisions together — without collapsing difference or defaulting to control — becomes essential. This research contributes to understanding how collective decision-making processes can be designed and stewarded to support felt alignment, integrity, and durable commitment.

The work is relevant to teams, leaders, and organizations navigating strategy, governance, innovation, and transformation in complex environments.

Research partnerships

I collaborate with teams, organizations, and networks interested in participatory research, pilot studies, and reflective inquiry related to collective decision-making and systems sensing. Partnerships are shaped collaboratively, with care for context, capacity, and mutual learning.
